Stack’s Chairman Q. David Bowers Honored

First to be Enshrined in the New PCGS CoinFacts
Dealer Hall of Fame

Stack’s is delighted and honored that our chairman, Q. David Bowers, has been elected as the first inductee in the new PCGS CoinFacts Dealer Hall of Fame.

“We want to start a program of honoring professional numismatists who have contributed to our hobby,” noted David Hall, co-founder of PCGS. “We consulted with other dealers, voted, and Dave was our number one choice. As years pass, other dealers will be elected to what I expect will be for professional numismatics what various Halls of Fame are for professionals in sports and other fields.”

The PCGS news release contained a capsule biography:

“(Quentin) David Bowers, Chairman of Stack’s in New York and New Hampshire, is a prolific author of over 50 books and monographs, and is the only person to ever serve as president of both the Professional Numismatists Guild (1977 – 1979) and the American Numismatic Association (1983 – 1985). He is a trustee of the New Hampshire Historical Society, fellow of the American Antiquarian Society, Massachusetts Historical Society and American Numismatic Society, and an annual lecturer at Harvard University. Bowers began buying and selling coins at the age of 14 while still in high school. He has cataloged and sold at public auction some of the most important numismatic collections ever assembled including the collections of Louis E. Eliasberg Sr., Harry W. Bass Jr., Ambassador and Mrs. R. Henry Norweb and the John Work Garrett Collection sold by order of The Johns Hopkins University. In addition to his own writings, Bowers now is helping to expand numismatic knowledge in his role as Numismatic Director of Whitman Publishing, LLC. Numismatic Literary Guild Executive Director Ed Reiter has described him as “a one-man library.” Bowers is one of the most revered and honored numismatists in the world.”

Christine Karstedt, president of Stack’s, attended the award luncheon at the American Numismatic Association Convention, then shared her thoughts

“At Stack’s we are all honored to have Dave receive what is sure to be one of the most aspired to honors in professional numismatics. And yet, despite all of this recognition, Dave remains Dave, and reiterates his favorite saying: ‘I’ve never worked a day in my life, as I enjoy numismatics so much.’

“Recently, he has been immersed with the Stack’s team in creating auction catalogs for our 5,000+ lot Americana Sale to be held in Philadelphia starting on September 30 with the Whitman Coins & Collectibles Expo and in planning for Stack’s 75th Anniversary Sale to be held in Baltimore in November, not to overlook writing for Whitman and helping the Smithsonian Institution with a research project.”

Richard Eliasberg, a son of Louis E. Eliasberg, recently wrote to Dave: “I read that you had been honored as an outstanding leader in the industry. I cannot think of anyone more deserving. Congratulations to you!”

As to Dave’s own comments: “I am deeply honored. I have always felt that numismatics is the world’s greatest hobby, a specialty that brings so many pleasures to so many people. I have enjoyed being a part of it, and I will do my best as a professional numismatist to continue sharing my knowledge and expertise with others. As the Hall of Fame grows in coming years I will delight in welcoming the other inductees. I appreciate very much what David Hall, PCGS, and their consultants have done.”
