One of the Finest Ecuadorian Escudos Known
Among the many Latin American rarities that highlight our New York International Sale is Lot 1578, an 1843 8 Escudo from Ecuador. This example, graded MS-62 by NGC, is one of the finest known of this popular type, and is tied with the Eliasberg and Millennia Collection specimens at this grade. This coin was a highlight of the Whittier Collection of Latin American Coins, sold in June 2006, and we are pleased to offer it again to collectors.
The design is charming, with a bust of Liberty, hair in a bun tied back with a headband inscribed LIBERTAD. The reverse depicts a trio of mountain peaks, with a large sunface at center above, seven stars and a band of Zodiac signs. This example is well struck for the type and has beautiful reddish gold toning with a wealth of satiny lustre. Destined to be a centerpiece of the next world gold coin collection it graces!
Don’t miss this opportunity. Our January International Sale is being held at our Auction Gallery at 110 West 57th Street, New York, NY. Lot viewing will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel during the New York International Numismatic Convention.
